Newsweek, January 28, 1980 contained an article under science about Clouds in Space. I was so taken by the article that I made several copies and saved them. The article discussed two extraordinary discoveries about these clouds. One concerned the oldest material ever identified in the universe; the other concerned the most powerful. The second discovery caught my attention as it described a supernova, creating a bubble, and as the bubble over took more stars, the explosions added to the hot gas bubble and left new stars in its wake. January 16, 2006, press release from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory of a Huge “Superbubble” of Gas Blowing Out of Milky Way again stirred up my interest, as this one was much closer. The thought that came to my mind as I read the first article, was if you have a bubble that is enlarging at near the speed of light, you would not see it until the last second before it over took you. The light that we observe from space is old and the things that we see may not exist anymore. This new Bubble is nearly 23,000 light-years from earth. Stated simply the light we are seeing from this Bubble occurred 23,000 years ago! Our Milky Way Galaxy is about 100,000 light-years across. A “Superbubble” with a diameter of 1,200 light-years is floating about 6,000 light-years from our planet at a temperature of 3.5 million degrees Fahrenheit, according to the first article. And more Superbubbles are being found each year, about Six so far. Attraction vs. Love

By Robert Curtis When we first meet someone, regardless of the way or medium that we meet, we are either attracted or not. Attraction, when pursued, eventually grows into levels of friendship and then may cross the barriers we build up, to protect ourselves, and grow into love. Attraction usually involves an instant decision of like or dislike, based on our own subconscious criteria. If we meet someone in person, we tend to size them up physically. If we meet through letters or phone conversation or internet chat, we tend to size them up, over a longer term, by how well they converse and how interesting (or complimentary) they are while we interact with them. It is true that people can act however they want, be whatever they want to be, over the internet. But eventually the true person leaks through the cracks and we begin to see their true self. Moral of the story? Its best to be your real self. You may eventually want to meet the person on the other end of the conversation. On the other hand, when you do meet the real person on the other end, remember that you have grown to like that person because of whats inside their mind and heart. You have found a potential soul mate who thinks as you think and feels much the same way that you feel. No one is perfect. We all have our own flaws and shortcomings. The concept of finding the right person is good. The concept of finding the perfect person is improbable and discouraging, because perfect doesnt exist. The way this person looks, their physical appearance, isnt as important as their inner looks, or soul. What we see is what we get, and hopefully the heart ranks the highest. We fall in love with someones soul, not the shape or size of their body. And although a certain number of things can be done to improve physical appearance, that shouldnt be our main criteria or requirement for friendship or companionship. State Citizenship Is Alive And Well

By Dan Goodman Did the 14th Amendment do away with State Citizenship? “The Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, ratified in 1868, creates or at least recognizes for the first time a citizenship of the United States, as distinct from that of the states.” Black’s Law Dictionary, 5th Edition, p. 591 [1979]. The answer is absolutely not. In fact the leading and controlling case on State Citizenship and United States Citizenship is the Supreme Court case, The Slaughter-House Cases (16 Wallace 36: 21 L.Ed. 394 [1873]). In this case, the Supreme Court distinguishes between State Citizenship and United States Citizenship. “It is quite clear, then, that there is a citizenship of the United States and a citizenship of a state, which are distinct from each other and which depend upon different characteristics of the individual.” The Slaughter-House Cases: 83 U.S. 36, 74. “The importance of the case can hardly be overestimated. By distinguishing between state citizenship and national citizenship and by emphasizing that the rights and privileges of federal citizenship do not include the protection of ordinary civil liberties such as freedom of speech and press, religion, etc., but only the privileges which one enjoys by virtue of his federal citizenship, the Court averted, for the time being at least, the revolution in our constitutional system apparently intended by the framers of the amendment and reserved to the states the responsibility for protecting civil rights generally.” Cases In Constitutional Law by Robert F. Cushman, 5th Edition, pp. 250-251 (College Law Textbook) [1979]. “Citizenship is elaborated in two privileges and immunities clauses of the United States Constitution. . . . The Slaughter-House Cases [1873] 83 U.S. 36, 21 L.Ed. 394, emphasized the distinct character of federal and state citizenship. Slaughter-House held that privileges and immunities conferred by state citizenship were outside federal reach through the Fourteenth Amendment. . . . Federal citizenship was seen as including only such things as interstate travel and voting. While subsequent decisions have extended the meaning of citizenship in the Fourteenth Amendment, Slaughter-House is still controlling in that it precludes use of privileges and immunities language in protecting citizens by federal authority.” Constitutional Law Deskbook - Individual Rights, by Chandler, Enslen, Renstrom; Second Edition, p. 634 (Lawyers Cooperative Publishing, 1993). “The Fourteenth Amendment did not obliterate the distinction between national and state citizenship, but rather preserved it. It is, that the distinction between citizenship of the United States and citizenship of a State is clearly recognized and established. It is quite clear, then, that there is a citizenship of the United States, and a citizenship of a State, which are distinct from each other, and which depend upon different characteristics or circumstances in the individual. We think this distinction and its explicit recognition in this Amendment of great weight in this argument, because the next paragraph of this same section, which is the one mainly relied on by the plaintiffs in error, speaks only of privileges and immunities of citizens of the United States, and does not speak of those of citizens of the several States. The argument, however, in favor of the plaintiffs rests wholly on the assumption that the citizenship is the same, and the privileges and immunities guaranteed by the clause are the same. The language is, ‘No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.’ It is a little remarkable, if this clause was intended as a protection to the citizen of a State against the legislative power of his own State, that the word citizen of the State should be left out when it is so carefully used, and used in contradistinction to citizens of the United States, in the very sentence which precedes it. It is too clear for argument that the change in phraseology was adopted understandingly and with a purpose. Of the privileges and immunities of the citizen of the United States, and of the privileges and immunities of the citizen of the State, and what they respectively are, we will presently consider; but we wish to state here that it is only the former which are placed by this clause under the protection of the Federal Constitution, and that the latter, whatever they may be, are not intended to have any additional protection by this paragraph of the amendment.” The Slaughter-House Cases: 83 U.S. 36, at 73-74. “The expression, Citizen of a State, is carefully omitted here. In Article IV, Section 2, Clause 1, of the Constitution of the United States, it had been already provided that ‘the Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.’ The rights of Citizens of the States [under Article IV, Section 2, Clause 1] and of citizens of the United States [under The Fourteenth Amendment] are each guarded by these different provisions. That these rights are separate and distinct, was held in the Slaughterhouse Cases, recently decided by the Supreme court. The rights of Citizens of the State, as such, are not under consideration in the Fourteenth Amendment. They stand as they did before the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment, and are fully guaranteed by other provisions.” United States v. Anthony: 24 Fed. Cas. 829, 830 (Case No. 14,459) [1873]. 2 “This provision [The Fourteenth Amendment] protects only those rights peculiar to being a citizen of the federal government; it does not protect those rights which relate to state citizenship. See Slaughter-House Cases 83 U.S. (16 Wall.) 36, 21 L.Ed. 394 (1873).” Jones v. Temmer: 829 F.Supp. 1226, 1232 [1993]. “In regard to that amendment [The Fourteenth Amendment] counsel for the plaintiff in this court truly says that there are certain privileges and immunities which belong to a citizen of the United States as such; otherwise it would be nonsense for the Fourteenth Amendment to prohibit a State from abridging them, and he proceeds to argue that admission to the bar of a State of a person who possesses the requisite learning and character is one of those which a State may not deny. In this latter proposition we are not able to concur with counsel. We agree with him that there are privileges and immunities belonging to citizens of the United States, in that relation and character, and that it is these and these alone which a State is forbidden to abridge. But the right to admission to practice in the courts of a State is not one of them. This right in no sense depends on citizenship of the United States. It has not, as far as we know, ever been made in any State, or in any case, to depend on citizenship at all. Certainly many prominent and distinguished lawyers have been admitted to practice, both in the State and Federal courts, who were not citizens of the United States or of any State. But, on whatever basis this right may be placed, so far as it can have any relation to citizenship at all, it would seem that, as to the courts of a State, it would relate to citizenship of the State, and as to Federal courts, it would relate to citizenship of the United States. The opinion just delivered in the Slaughter-House Cases renders elaborate argument in the present case unnecessary; for, unless we are wholly and radically mistaken in the principles on which those cases are decided, the right to control and regulate the granting of license to practice law in the courts of a State is one of those powers which are not transferred for its protection to the Federal government, and its exercise is in no manner governed or controlled by citizenship of the United States in the party seeking such license. It is unnecessary to repeat the argument on which the judgment in those cases is founded. It is sufficient to say they are conclusive of the present case.” Bradwell v. Dealing with a Break Up Without Breaking Down

By Donald Mills Because we invest so much intimacy into our romantic relationships, going through a breakup can seem on par with experiencing the death of a loved one or close friend. Often the most painful aspect is that we dont really know what to think; there is a fluctuating mixture of hatred, love, pain, thoughts of revenge, acceptance, and then pain again, etc. We long to be embedded in the great moments again, wondering how we got from there to here and if we are capable of getting there again. Our minds may start to play tricks on us as we personalize everything in agonizing detail rather than looking at the situation realistically. Realistically, people break up every day because the fact that were all different is what makes life so interesting. Realistically, there are several billion people in the world, and at least several thousand to choose from that you could find compatibility with. Turning inward with the irrational belief that there is one person for you is very unrealistic, and thankfully so. Here are a few more important points to keep in mind as you work your way through the break up: Dont try to deny any negative feelings that come to you regarding the breakup, but look at these feelings as an outside observer. Personalizing these feelings is what causes bitterness, long-term depression, and all the wrinkles and gray hair that come with it. Whenever possible, if you start thinking about the break up and your ex and get emotional, take 10 minutes or so to just sit quietly and observe whats coming at you without adding to it or trying to justify it further. Simply observe whats happening to you physically. Its very important if youre suffering from feelings of rejection over the breakup to consider a solution to the problem. Solutions vary from person to person, but some things that are NOT solutions are: Indulging in addictions of drugs, alcohol, or junk food; sleeping with anyone you can find for revenge; trashing your ex to your friends and anyone else who will listen; trying to become somebody else in the hope of a reconciliation. A real solution involves finding ways to continually better yourself in an effort to get over any feelings of worthlessness. Take the opportunity of being single to do those things that you have wanted to do for some time, but have procrastinated about because your time was being taken up with your relationship If you ended the relationship and are experiencing guilt because you dont feel like you handled it as sensitively as you could, then take some time to figure out the root of the problem, so that you can try to end it with less emotion and more reason. This is particularly important if you are in a situation where you will be seeing your ex regularly or sporadically, as when you work together, have children together, or have mutual friends. Open your mind to the idea that there is a peaceful solution to every problem. If your ex is acting flippantly about the breakup, dont let that get to you. Different people deal with emotionally charged problems in different ways, so dont assume that because your ex is not taking it as hard as you outwardly that there isnt regret and confusion occurring on their part as well. Dont do yourself the disservice of wasting your mental energy and spiritual powers on petty thoughts of resentment, jealousy, hatred or revenge. At the same time, dont deny that there is pain; just see it for what it is - a desire for warmth, a desire to feel inspired, and a desire to be in love with the world. Take the time you have to really realize that these states of mind do not require somebody elses participation. By Dan Ohler I should-a got up earlier. Then I would-a missed this heavy traffic. I should-a made that phone call. Then I would-a got their business. I should-a recognized him for his work. Then I would-a still had him as an employee. I should-a listened more. Then I would-a still been married. I should-a done more should-a-ing. Then I would-a had more to regret. Ridiculous isnt it? Do you should-a, would-a yourself, and keep yourself stuck in the past? Ive done it. I made a business investment decision that did not turn out well. We lost a whack of hard-earned dough. For several years, I beat myself up because of all the should-as that I could have done so we would-a still had that money. I was scared about our financial security. I blamed other people for the failure of the business. The would-a thoughts haunted me continually as I looked around at things that we wanted to be and do. Our lives would-a been greatly enhanced personally and professionally. Life would-a been much easier. This failure attitude affected me every day for a long time. It burned in my heart and mind. It negatively affected my relationships with many people. This stinkin thinkin is the attitude of losers. With it brewing in me, I was ineffective and unsuccessful at everything I did. I was stuck in past events. Finally I realized what I was doing to myself. It had nothing to do with that investment, or those people. It was all about me, and I am thrilled with the lesson, gift-wrapped in this event. I learned that all of my results in my life are a sum total of the choices I have made. If I dont like the result, I have the ability to make new choices, which will give me a different result. I learned that there is a lesson in every event, and I now consciously look to find it. In regard to the investment, I made the best choices with the information I had at the time. We lost money so what? Money is a trading commodity, and there is tons of it in our world. In regard to my relationships with the people involved, I chose to forgive them, and forgive myself for our choices of words and actions. I hold no grievances or resentment toward them. They made the best choices with the information they had. The experience helped me to become consciously aware of my thoughts and actions. I now choose to keep my thoughts positive, and choose my actions according to my core values of honesty, integrity, kindness, and respect. I do what I love to do, and I am rewarded with money, and other precious experiences more magnificently than I expect. Rather than should-a, would-a, I look forward to each new experience in life. I treasure the feelings of vulnerability because its fun, and thats when I learn my best lessons. What about you? Do you should-a, would-a, or choose to live now? Apply these seven strategies to bust the should-a, would-a syndrome, and have more fun: Become consciously aware of your thoughts. Notice the mind chatter. Monitor the thoughts carefully, and continually. When the should-a thoughts of the past enter your mind, look for the lesson, and forgive yourself. You made the choice based upon your knowledge and emotions at the time. You cant change it. When the would-a thoughts enter your mind, forgive yourself and graciously accept where you are now. When you have worry or fear thoughts of the future, affirm that you can easily handle any event. Forgive yourself for the thoughts. What you worry about wont likely happen anyway. When you feel vulnerable, acknowledge the thoughts and feelings, give yourself a Yahoo in your mind, or out loud. It will help you to remain positive and honour the moment. Consciously make your choices according to your core values and always be respectful of your relationships. Lighten up and have fun. Life is not as serious as you make it. I make mistakes and I have a hunch that you make mistakes. Get over it! Apply the seven strategies above. I guarantee that you will learn valuable lessons about yourself, improve your relationships, and have tons more fun. Bust the should-a, would-a syndrome and replace it with the I-am-a syndrome.
