Clean Your House in Half the Time!

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Alli Ross When cleaning your house, the first thing you need to do is to find a supply and tool apron. (gardening apron works well) The apron should contain several large, deep pockets. In these pockets, you will keep your cleaning supplies …. (glass cleaner, vacuum nozzles, bathroom supplies, etc.). This little known secret can cut your cleaning time in half. Wear microfiber cloths at all times (they are the best dusting tool for all surfaces.) This way, you have your dusting tool handy at all times. Work your way around a room. Start at the top with your high dusting and proceed to your low dusting. Buy filters for your home that minimize dust. When you begin your cleaning routine, move clock-wise around the room. Moving in one direction as you dust and clean glass is the fastest way to clean a room. After dusting, it’s time to vacuum any cloth furniture and then proceed to the carpets. To save time, clean every floor in your house at the same time. If you vacuum one room at a time, dirt and dust can easily be carried from the dirty floor to the clean floor. To finish, mop the bare floors and allow them to dry thoroughly. The bathroom is often one of the most dreaded chores. However, you can turn it into a manageable task by taking five minutes twice a week to spin through with a paper towel and pine sol. Concentrate. This is often hard to do because housework can get very boring. However, if you focus on what youre doing, youll finish faster. Put on some music for a little extra motivation! Handy First Aid Tips

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carol_Bond] Carol Bond Handy First Aid Tips When someone is injured or suddenly becomes ill, there is usually a critical period before you can get medical treatment and it is this period that is of the utmost importance to the victim. What you do, or what you don’t do, in that interval can mean the difference between life and death. You owe it to yourself, your family and your neighbors to know and to understand procedures that you can apply quickly and intelligently in an emergency. Every household should have some type of first aid kit, and if you do not already have one, assemble your supplies now. Tailor the contents to fit your family’s particular needs. Don’t add first aid supplies to the jumble of toothpaste and cosmetics in the medicine cabinet. Instead, assenble them in a suitable, labeled box (such as a fishing tackle box or small took chest with hinged cover), so that everything will be handy when needed. Label everything in the kit clearly, and indicate what it is used for. Be sure not to lock the box - otherwise you may be hunting for the key when that emergency occurs. Place the box on a shelf beyond the reach of small children, and check it periodically and always restock items as soon as they are used up. Keep all medications, including non-prescription drugs such as aspirin, out of reach of children. When discarding drugs, be sure to dispose of them where they cannot be retrieved by children or pets. When an emergency occurs, make sure the injured victim’s airway is not blocked by the tongue and that the mouth is free of any secretions and foreign objects. It is extremely important that the person is breathing freely. And if not, you need to administer artificial respiration promptly. See that the victim has a pulse and good blood circulation as you check for signs of bleeding. Act fast if the victim is bleeding severely or if he has swallowed poison or if his heart or breathing has stopped. Remember every second counts. Although most injured persons can be safely moved, it is vitally important not to move a person with serious neck or back injuries unless you have to save him from further danger. Keep the patient lying down and quiet. If he has vomited and there is no danger that his neck is broken, turn hin on his side to prevent choking and keep him warn by covering him with blankets or coats. Have someone call for medical assistance while you apply first aid. The person who summons help should explain the nature of the emergency and ask what should be done pending the arrival of the ambulance. Reassure the victim, and try to remain calm yourself. Your calmness can allay the feat and panic of the patient. Don’t give fluids to an unconscious or semiconscious person; fluids may enter his windpipe and cause suffocation. Don’t try to arouse an unconscious person by slapping or shaking. Look for an emergency medical identification card or an emblematic device that the victim may be wearing to alert you to any health problems, allergies or diseases that may require special care. Fiber Foods Can Do Miracle in Natural Weight Loss

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Nick Mutt In a report, it has been found that consumption of fiber foods works very well in natural weight loss. Actually fibers do not get digested by the human digestive system and it passes out from the colons taking all the waste material with it. It provides bulk and softens the stools thereby helping in regular bowel movements and avoiding constipation. In the intestine, fiber produces a gel which binds the bile acids and this leads the lever to convert cholesterol into bile thereby reducing cholesterol levels. You will be surprised to know that diseases like obesity, diabetes, colon diseases etc. are minimal in countries where the population has a regular dose of fiber in their diet. Fibers are excellent means to have a healthy digestive system. Fiber makes people feel less hungry on account of its bulk and reduces appetite resulting in natural weight loss. It also helps the body in controlling blood sugar. The ancient ayurvedic medicine system recommends consumption of fiber rich vegetables in large quantities to get rid of all the toxins from your body. Removal of toxins automatically ensures removal of excess fat from your body. Foods that are highly rich in fibers are oat bran, corn bran, rice bran and wheat bran. Foods with medium fiber contents are whole grains, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat flour, oatmeal-rolled oats, steel cut oats, wheat-oat flour, corn meal and brown rice. Foods that are low in fiber and that needs to be avoided are white flour (bleached or unbleached), pasta, cream of wheat, oat flour, corn starch, white rice. One important aspect of fiber and weight loss is drinking lots of water. Water makes the fiber swell and work better. Baby Shower Hosting 101

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Dana Williams Are you ready to host the best baby shower ever but don’t know where to start? Baby showers are fun, but planning one can be tedious. In this article we’ll cover the basics to get you started. So who should host the baby shower? Traditionally, only non-relatives are to host a baby shower — co-workers, church groups, etc.; however, it has become more common and acceptable for mothers and sisters to host showers too. The important thing is that someone take the initiative to host the shower — what a wonderful display of caring for a growing family and a special way to help welcome a new life into the world. It is also perfectly acceptable for more than one person to host a baby shower. It can be fun for a group of friends to share the responsibilities and excitement of planning and hosting this special event. When it comes to inviting guests, you likely have some idea of those you want to invite to the shower, but it is always a safe bet to run the guest list by the mom-to-be to ensure you haven’t left anyone out. You can invite guests via a phone call or an e-mail (be sure they check their mail regularly!), but the written invitation is still the most preferable way to kick off a shower. You can even find baby shower ecard invitations online. Just do a simple search online and I’m sure you’ll find one. No matter what type of invitation you use, be sure to include pertinent information — whether it regards a theme, a note of where the mom-to-be has registered, a map or written directions to the shower, or any special item you want the guests to bring for the mom. Showers are normally given a month or two before the mom’s due date. It’s a good idea to give the mom enough time following the shower to shop for items she didn’t receive, yet wants to have before the baby arrives. And of course you don’t want to hold the shower too close to baby’s due date in case he or she makes an early arrival! Baby showers are normally held in the home of the hostess. If desired though, you can certainly host a shower at a church fellowship area, a favorite restaurant, or even at a banquet hall — it really all depends on what atmosphere you are looking for and how much money you want to spend. If the shower will be held in a restaurant, make reservations at least two weeks prior to the date. At one- week prior, one of the organizers should speak with the manager to confirm the details. The shower should last around one and a half to two hours. Things may wind down early or they may likely continue on as guests chat together. There are many variations on showers, but we have devised a general “schedule” for baby showers. You can add/remove any part and re-order it to your liking. Greet Guests - serve light appetizers After all or almost all guests have arrived, go around the room and have each guest introduce themselves and identify how they know the mother-to-be. Play 2-4 Shower Games. It is good to play games at the beginning as ice-breakers. Remember some guests may not know *anyone* but the mother-to-be. Let everyone go get whatever food may be available and then once everyone has been served, the mother-to-be can begin to open her gifts. Be sure to have someone write down each gift and who it is from. It will make sending thank-you notes a lot easier. People chat and usually leave a few at a time. Make sure the mother-to-be gets to say goodbye to everyone and the hostess thanks the person for attending. If the hostess has shower favors, they should give this to the guests upon leaving. Sawbones

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Shari Caudron I was rushing through the white-tented terminal building at Denver International Airport when my attention was diverted as if often is — by a storefront massage business. Checking my wristwatch, I calculated I had just enough time for a 20-minute chair massage. I settled onto the light gray vinyl chair and placed my face inside the cushioned headrest. The massage therapist introduced himself. “I’m Lee,” he said. “But you can call me Sawbones.” He must have seen the cartoon question mark floating above my head in an imaginary white bubble “Sawbones?”for he went on to tell me about himself. Digging his thumbs into the back of my neck, Sawbones explained that massage was a new line of work for him. “Do you like it?” I asked, my words muffled by the cushioned face rest. “Yes, ma’am,” he said, revealing a slight rancher’s drawl. “I get to meet interesting people, especially here at the airport. A few weeks ago, I massaged the lawyer for the Oklahoma City Bomber. He was on his way to his clients execution.” Sawbones paused, as if remembering the occasion. “He was a little tense.” Although his comment demanded a sarcastic response, I couldnt think of one fast enough. Instead, I asked Sawbones if he worked only at the airport. “No, ma’am. I also have an office by the Stock Show Complex.” “The Stock Show Complex?” “Yes, ma’am. That’s because I have another business. Custom cowboy hats.” The cartoon question mark re-appeared. “Cowboy hats?” “Yes, ma’am. I sell them at the Grizzly Rose, the country-western bar north of downtown. I inhaled the rosemary scent of the massage oil and debated whether to prod Sawbones for more information. Since I was unlikely to meet another cowboy-hat-making-masseur in the near future, I asked him if his massage business was growing. “Yes, ma’am. See, I do horses too.” “Horses?” I asked, feeling like I was being sucked down a conversational rabbit hole. “Yes, ma’am. Horses like massage. They can get testy though.” “I’ll bet.” I pictured a blonde Palomino lying hooves up on a massage table. As Sawbones kneaded my upper arms, he asked what I did for a living. “I’m a writer,” I said. Actually, I didn’t say that, because just then, Sawbones’ fingers pushed my head into the headrest making my answer sound more like “Imamiffer.” Sawbones was unfazed. “Really?! he exclaimed. I’m a writer too!” He said this as if we were distant cousins meeting at a genealogy conference. “I write scripts!” “Scripts?” “Yes, ma’am. See, I also perform in Wild West Shows.” The rabbit hole was getting deeper by the second. “What kinds of things are in your shows?” “Shoot-outs. Stuff like that. I have a friend who looks like Abraham Lincoln. He’s gonna be in our show tomorrow night.” Now, I’ve never been that great at history but Ive never really pictured Abe Lincoln in a shoot-out, except, of course, for the incident at Fords Theater. I was about to ask Sawbones how Abe figured into his act when he pulled my arms behind my back and away from my body as if dressing a chicken. “You sure got some knots under here,” he said, poking underneath my shoulder blades. I began to comprehend the testiness of his equine clients. Soon, our 20-minutes was up and Sawbones handed me his business card. “Massage,” it read. “For Horses and Humans.” “Just for future reference,” he added, “I also do home massage. It’s only 50 bucks and I bring my own table, oil, and CDs.” I accepted the card graciously even though I was fairly certain I’d never pay a man named Sawbones to tote oil and soft music into my house. It’s been a week since my encounter with the custom-cowboy-hat-making, wild-west-show-performing, horse-and-human massage therapist and I can’t get him out of my mind. Now, I know there are people who might find Sawbones a little low brow and unfocused. These people would assume Sawbones was a drifter who hadn’t found his true calling. But to me, Sawbones is wise. He can work indoors or out. He works with his hands and his mind. He also has built-in job security. The bottom could fall out of the cowboy hat market and Sawbones would still make it in the world. Furthermore, Sawbones has already figured out what many of us spend our entire careers learning: How important it is to try new things. “Ma’am,” he said, “I do all these things because I promised myself I would never do the same boring thing all day long.” Many people I know have said this same thing to themselves at one time or another. But the difference between Sawbones and most people is that he is not afraid to tackle new challenges, even if those challenges involve tense attorneys and testy horses. So think about Sawbones the next time you’re confronted with a new opportunity. Even if the job or project doesn’t work out the way you expected, you might end up with good fodder for airport conversation. Copyright, 2005, Shari Caudron. College Loans: How Much Do You Really Need?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jill_Dow]Jill Dow Many students are leaving high school to begin the long endeavor of college. But before YOU go to college, you may find yourself wondering how you’re going to pay for it. The answer is with a college loan. Most college students obtain student loans, but how do you figure out how much you really need for your college expenses? There are many aspects to consider. The first part of determining how much you need for a student loan is to figure out how much the cost of your schooling will be each year. First, figure out the cost of your tuition. Next, figure the cost of books, lab supplies, and school supplies. Finally, figure out the cost of your room and board. Once you have each expense tallied, add the cost of up for 1 year. The second thing you should determine is personal needs. This includes: food, transportation, unexpected expenses, car insurance, medical insurance, etc. Be sure that you always figure in a little extra because unexpected things can arise, and prices always tend to go up. Then add all of this together for the amount it would cost for 1 year. You’ve now figured the cost for a year, but it’s best to get the college loan for the entire time you are to be at school. Most college loans are offered this way. Your credit score and your debt to income ratio determine college loan amounts. Loans will not be given for high amounts if the lender doesn’t think you’ll make enough to pay the monthly loan payment. Now that you know how much it’s going to cost you to go to school and survive, you need to see if you will have any other type of income coming in. If you are working a part time job, you may not need the loan for the total amount. Do remember, that each month you will have to make a payment for the loan. Make sure that whatever your income is, that it is enough to make your monthly loan payment and any interest incurred. Pay attention to your debt to income ratio. If you don’t make enough money to pay the monthly payment, you will have to take out a smaller student loan. You can go online to get help determining what you really need to pay for college. Check out our college loan calculator resources athttp://www.collegeloanresource.com/collegeloancalculator/ or, you can sit down with a piece of paper and figure it with some help from family or loved ones. Take your time and don’t forget to include everything. College can be very expensive. It is best to calculate the expenses right the first time. How To Reduce Banking Fees

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Jeffrey Strain Nobody likes to pay banking fees, but if you aren’t active in trying to reduce them, you are probably paying more in fees than you need to be. One of the most important actions to take in order to reduce the banking fees is to figure out exactly how you use your bank. Consider what your average balance will be and how low the balance may dip. Also consider the type of transactions you make and what types of services you need. Once you have a better understanding of how you utilize the bank, you are in the position to get the most out of it while avoiding fees for services you don’t need or use. Probably the best move you can make is to try and qualify as a member of a credit union. Credit unions are not for profit organizations meaning they don’t have to worry about making a profit. The qualifying factors to join a credit union vary from institution to institution, so you will need to check with each. The good news is that there are a large number of credit unions associated with a wide variety of organizations. Qualifying for inclusion has been broadened a great deal over the years, so it is much easier to find a way to qualify. Since credit unions are there for their members and not out to make a profit, they are much more likely to offer completely free checking or free checking with a small minimum balance. In most cases, they also charge lower banking fees and their interest rates on accounts are higher. The one big drawback is that they tend to have fewer branches and automatic teller machines (ATMs) than major bank networks which can be costly if you are an ATM addict. You can begin your search to locate a credit union near you at the National Credit Union Administration: http://www.ncua.gov/siteoutline.html If a credit union isn’t a possibility, then you need to take a look at the different types of banks. While the major banks will have a better distribution of ATMs and a greater variety of services, their fees can be as much as 50% higher than those of local banks. It is also worthwhile investigating Internet banks since their fees still tend to be lower than those of major banks. Once an appropriate bank has been chosen, reducing the standard fees they charge is an important. Although there are a wide variety of checking accounts offered, most banks will offer at least two typical checking account alternatives. A basic checking account will have a lower minimum balance requirement, but it will usually have restrictions on the number of no cost transactions you are able to make each month. A premium account will usually offer interest and allow for more no cost transactions, but will require a larger minimum balance to avoid monthly fees. Not meeting the requirements of either of these can be quite costly, so it pays to chose the checking account style that best fits your use. Although an interest earning checking account seems like the obvious choice to make, there are a variety of situations where you’re better off choosing a no interest checking account. If your account balance fluctuates quite a bit so that you are likely to go under the minimum balance required for the account even a few times during the year, you are likely to pay more in fees than you will ever earn in interest. In addition, checking account interest rates are some of the lowest, so choosing a checking account with no interest and a low minimum balance can make sense if you can put the difference into a higher yielding account. Many people have several bank accounts at different institutions. It sometimes make sense to consolidate them at one bank. Consolidating your banking to one bank can give you more leverage in negotiating fee reductions and allow you to be more proactive in getting the best deals available. If you keep several different accounts at a bank, some banks will take into consideration the total balance of all your accounts at the bank. Although you may not have the minimum requirement in your checking account to earn interest, if you are also keeping a large deposit in a CD account that more than covers the checking minimum, the bank may be willing to count the balance of the combination of accounts as meeting the minimum requirement. Another option that can give you leverage when negotiating on checking account fees is to have your paycheck direct deposited. Although every bank has its own set of rules, most will waive the checking account monthly fees if you direct deposit your paycheck. Don’t, however, assume they will automatically give it to you. Chances are you will have to politely ask before they offer you this service. A further possibility in getting free checking is to invest in the bank. Although this doesn’t work with the larger banks, some small to medium sized banks have programs that award free checking and other special offers to investors. All you need to do is purchase a single share of stock to qualify.
